What the good ones have in common
- The point lands in the first second. Meta shows an image Story ad for 5 to 16 seconds, or until someone taps away. Each ad above makes one point a viewer can take in before deciding.
- The headline sits in the upper middle. Below the top 14%, where the profile icon is, and well above the bottom 35%, where the call to action goes.
- The product is big. A product that looked fine in a feed can look small at full screen. These ads give it a large share of the screen.
- The contrast is strong. Dark ads with light type (Pebblemill, Northvale, Stagwick) and light ads with dark type (Duneloft) both read on a phone in daylight. Thin type on a busy photo doesn't.
- The ad and the primary text agree. Meta suggests 125 characters of primary text for a Story. Say the same thing there as on the image, so the two don't compete.
Six mistakes we see in Story ads
- A feed ad dropped into a Story unchanged. Its bottom line ends up where the call to action goes. Our October samples above show exactly that, which is why we now lay the Story out separately.
- The price or button on the bottom edge. Instagram draws its own call to action there. Put the price next to the product instead.
- Words against the side edges. Meta asks for 6% clear on each side, about 86 px at 1440 x 2560.
- Three messages on one screen. A review, an offer and a feature list compete for a few seconds. Make three Stories instead.
- Small print you only checked on a monitor. Look at the design on your phone, at arm's length, before you run it.
- Only one Story. A Story has one line to win with, so make a few with different opening lines and keep the one people tap through.
How to use these as a starting point
- Pick the group that fits what your store can prove: a strong rating for the first, real reviews for the second, a feature people ask about for the third, a good lifestyle photo for the fourth.
- Write the one line first. If it doesn't fit on two lines at Story size, it's two ads.
- Lay the 9:16 out on its own, or check the placed version against the safe zone in Ads Manager before you publish.
- Run three or more Stories with different openings, and keep making more of the one people tap through.
