Clothing ad prompts, tested on one heavyweight tee

A plain oat T-shirt is about the easiest product an image model can draw, so we expected the prompts to get it right. Mostly they did. We ran five common clothing ad prompts for Oatfield Supply, a fictional brand, in the image models behind ChatGPT and Gemini and a Midjourney-style keyword prompt. The mistakes moved to places shoppers check: the fit, the fabric weight and the tag.

Updated · Every prompt ran once on October 17, 2026, for a fictional brand. Nothing was retried or cherry-picked.

In short

What is a good AI prompt for a clothing ad?

Attach a photo of the real garment, say the colour, fit, neckline and labels must not change, and give the fabric facts exactly as your product page states them. For on-model shots, describe the fit in words too. In our test the free-writing prompt changed 260 gsm to 300 and added Made in USA.

The five prompts, run for real

Oatfield Supply · The Heavyweight Tee, Oat · $42 · 4.7 from 2,318 reviews · fictional

Oatfield's product page: The Heavyweight Tee in Oat, $42; 260 gsm organic cotton jersey, garment-dyed and pre-shrunk so it keeps its fit; a ribbed crew neck that won't stretch out; dropped shoulders and a slightly cropped, boxy body; sizes XS to XXL; cut and sewn in Los Angeles; rated 4.7 from 2,318 reviews. A to C had no photo; D and E had the folded packshot shown here.

The packshot attached to prompts D and E, and the file our engine places. Oatfield Supply is a fictional brand; this photo was made once for our sample library.
  1. AI output for the first prompt: a young man in sunglasses and a green cap with Oatfield on it, wearing a boxy oat T-shirt on a sunny palm-lined street, beside the brand name, The Heavyweight Tee in Oat, $42, a Shop now button and five feature lines.
Made with GPT-5.4 Image 2 (OpenAI, through the OpenRouter API), October 17, 2026, for a fictional brand.

    Prompt AChatGPT-style prompt, no photo

    The ChatGPT streetwear prompt

"Model wearing the tee in a sunny street" is the default lifestyle ask in most clothing prompts for ChatGPT.

    The prompt, word for word

Create a streetwear Instagram ad for my clothing brand OATFIELD SUPPLY. Product: The Heavyweight Tee in Oat, 260 gsm organic cotton, boxy fit, garment-dyed, sizes XS-XXL, cut and sewn in Los Angeles, $42. Show a model wearing the oat T-shirt in a sunny street. Include the brand name, product name, price and a "Shop now" button.

    What went right

    • The tee looks like Oatfield's: oat colour, boxy cut, short sleeves at the right length.
    • Every fact is spelled right: 260 gsm organic cotton, boxy fit, garment-dyed, XS to XXL, cut and sewn in Los Angeles, $42.

    What went wrong

    • The model wears a green cap with OATFIELD on it. The brand doesn't sell a cap, so the ad shows merch nobody can buy.

Could you run it? The one no-photo run in our whole test that got the product right, helped by how plain a tee is. Remove the cap before using it.

  2. AI output for the second prompt: a folded oat T-shirt with a green Oatfield neck label and a white hang tag on a wooden table, under the headline The only T-shirt you'll need., with three ticked benefits, the rating and Price: $42.
Made with Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) (Google, through the OpenRouter API), October 17, 2026, for a fictional brand.

    Prompt BGemini-style prompt, no photo

    The Gemini folded-tee prompt

A folded tee with a tag, plus a model-written headline and benefits: the usual "clothing brand ad" request in Gemini.

    The prompt, word for word

Generate a clothing brand ad for Oatfield Supply The Heavyweight Tee ($42). Folded oat-colored heavyweight T-shirt with a green neck label that says OATFIELD and a hang tag. Write a catchy headline and three benefits, add "4.7 stars from 2,318 reviews" and the price. Clean, minimal fashion look.

    What went right

    • The rating and price are exact, and the green neck label reads OATFIELD.
    • The fold, fabric texture and colour look like a real heavyweight tee.

    What went wrong

    • The fabric weight is wrong twice: "300 GSM" in a benefit and on the tag. The tee is 260 gsm.
    • The hang tag says "Made in USA". The page says cut and sewn in Los Angeles; the FTC holds an unqualified Made in USA claim to "all or virtually all" made here.
    • "Softens with every wash" isn't on the page, which promises the opposite kind of benefit: it keeps its fit.
    • "The only T-shirt you'll need" is an absolute claim no store can back up.

Could you run it? Looks like a calm, minimal ad and carries a wrong spec and a regulated origin claim. Don't run it.

  3. AI output for the third prompt: a folded oat T-shirt with a thick ribbed collar, a green woven Oatfield neck label and a kraft hang tag printed Oatfield, on a linen backdrop, with no other text.
Made with FLUX.2 Pro (Black Forest Labs, through Higgsfield), October 17, 2026, for a fictional brand.

    What went right

    • Colour, collar rib and the green OATFIELD neck label are all right.
    • The fabric detail is good enough for a product page close-up.

    What went wrong

    • The hang tag just says OATFIELD. The real one reads OATFIELD SUPPLY, HEAVYWEIGHT TEE.
    • No headline, price or button: you'd add the ad on top.

Could you run it? A usable flat-lay if the tag is out of shot. As an ad it's half finished.

  4. AI output for the fourth prompt: Oatfield's folded oat tee with its green neck label and kraft hang tag reading Oatfield Supply Heavyweight Tee on a wooden bench in warm light, under the headline 260 gsm. Holds its shape., with $42 and the rating.
Made with GPT Image 2.5 (OpenAI, through Higgsfield), October 17, 2026, for a fictional brand.

Prompt DChatGPT-style prompt with the product photo

    ChatGPT with the tee photo

Attach the flat-lay and ask for an ad: the edit workflow OpenAI's help pages describe.

    The prompt, word for word

Here is my product photo. Turn it into an Instagram ad for my clothing brand Oatfield Supply. Put the folded tee on a wooden bench with a soft shadow, warm afternoon light. Keep the T-shirt, the neck label and the hang tag exactly as they are. Add the headline "260 gsm. Holds its shape.", the price $42 and "4.7 stars from 2,318 reviews".

    What went right

    • Tee, neck label and the full hang tag text match the photo.
    • The headline puts the right number, 260 gsm, front and centre, with the price and rating exact.
    • Warm light on the bench gives the flat-lay some life without changing the colour much.

    What went wrong

    Nothing we could find.

Could you run it? Runnable. Every number on it came from the page, typed in by us, which is why it holds up.

  5. AI output for the fifth prompt: a young man in an oat T-shirt standing against a sunlit concrete wall with his hands in his pockets, inside a frame with The Heavyweight Tee, $42 below.
Made with Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) (Google, through Higgsfield), October 17, 2026, for a fictional brand.

Prompt EGemini-style prompt with the product photo

    Gemini with the tee photo

Putting a flat-lay onto a person is what most owners hope an AI tool will do for apparel.

    The prompt, word for word

Use this exact T-shirt. Show a young man wearing it, standing against a sunlit concrete wall, hands in pockets, full upper body. Keep the T-shirt's color, neck rib and fit exactly the same. Add the text "The Heavyweight Tee, $42" at the bottom.

    What went right

    • The colour and the ribbed crew neck carry over, and the model looks natural.
    • The caption is spelled right.

    What went wrong

    • The fit changed. This tee is a regular cut and length; Oatfield's is boxy and slightly cropped with dropped shoulders, which a folded photo can't show.
    • The green neck label is out of sight, so nothing ties the shirt to the brand.

Could you run it? A nice portrait of a different fit. For apparel, an on-model shot needs a real fit photo or a precise description.

What the five runs show for clothing

A plain tee is forgiving: four of five runs drew a believable oat T-shirt, and the no-photo ChatGPT run was the only time in our 15-product test a text prompt got the product right. The trouble was in the details shoppers read: a fabric weight changed from 260 to 300 gsm, an origin claim on a tag, and a cap the brand doesn't sell.

The Gemini on-model run shows the limit of a flat-lay. The model kept the colour and collar, then guessed the fit. If fit is your selling point, give the tool a photo of the garment worn, or write the cut in exact words.

With the folded packshot attached and the text spelled out, ChatGPT produced an ad we'd run. Lines built on facts like the 260 gsm are on our clothing ad ideas page.

A clothing prompt pack that starts from your product photo

Attach your own garment photo to each prompt. Copy fabric, fit and origin from your product page exactly as written. For channels and a first budget around these ads, see our guide to advertising a clothing brand.

  1. 01

    The flat-lay hero

    For the cleanest product ad.

Use the attached photo of my [GARMENT] exactly as it is: colour, neckline, stitching, neck label and tag text must not change. Place it on [SURFACE] in [LIGHT], with a soft shadow. Add only: headline "[FABRIC OR FIT FACT, copied from my page]", price "[PRICE]". Portrait 4:5, no other words.
  2. 02

    The fit shot

When you have a photo of it worn.

Use the attached photo of the garment being worn as the reference for fit. Keep the cut exactly: [FIT IN WORDS, e.g. boxy body, dropped shoulders, slightly cropped]. Change only the background to [SETTING]. Keep the person's pose natural, hands with five fingers. No text, no extra clothing items with my logo.
  3. 03

    The fabric close-up

For heavyweight, organic or textured fabrics.

Keep the attached garment unchanged and crop in on the [COLLAR / HEM / FABRIC] so the texture fills the frame. Add one line copied from my page: "[FABRIC FACT]". Nothing else.
  4. 04

    The review ad

When customers talk about fit and wear.

Keep the attached folded garment exactly as photographed on the right. On the left, set this review word for word: "[REVIEW]", then "[RATING] stars from [REVIEW COUNT] reviews". No badges.
  5. 05

    The tag check

    Before you download.

Read every word and number on the garment, labels and tags in your image and compare them with my photo and my text. List anything changed or added, including origin claims. Then make a corrected version that changes nothing else.

Tips for each tool, for clothing

ChatGPT

  • Attach the flat-lay and name the parts that can't change: neck label, hang tag, stitching. Our run kept the full tag text.
  • Say "no other items with my logo". Without a photo, ours put the brand on a cap.
  • Ask for the 9:16 version separately and reread the tag; each generation redraws it.

Gemini

  • A folded photo can't tell the model how the garment fits. Attach an on-body photo, or write the cut out (boxy, dropped shoulders, cropped).
  • If it writes benefits, check every number. Ours turned 260 gsm into 300.
  • Origin words are claims. Delete any "Made in" line you didn't write.

Midjourney-style tools

  • Flat-lays are a strength: texture and folds come out well. Tags and small labels come out simplified.
  • Use keyword renders for styling ideas and backdrops, then shoot or composite your real garment.
  • The --ar parameter only applies in Midjourney; other tools ignore it.

Questions about clothing ad prompts

Is there a good clothes prompt generator?

You don't need one. A generator writes a longer description, and the problems we saw came from description: wrong fabric weight, an added origin claim, a guessed fit. Attach your garment photo and use a prompt from the pack above with your own facts.

Can ChatGPT design clothes?

It can draw garments and mock up designs, but for ads you want your real product, not a design. In our test, with the flat-lay attached, GPT Image 2.5 kept the tee, labels and tag exactly. Without a photo, the tee was close and the ad added a cap.

Can AI put my T-shirt on a model?

Yes, and the result can look real. Our Nano Banana Pro run kept the colour and collar but changed a boxy, cropped tee into a regular fit. Give it a photo of the garment worn, or describe the cut exactly, and check it against your size chart.

Can I say Made in USA in a clothing ad?

Only if it's true in the FTC's sense: an unqualified Made in USA claim means all or virtually all of the product is made here. If your page says cut and sewn in Los Angeles, say exactly that. One of our AI runs added Made in USA to a tag on its own.

What is a good slogan for clothing?

One that names the thing customers notice: "Heavy on purpose." or "Finally a tee that doesn't go see-through." (a customer's words). Absolute lines like "the only T-shirt you'll need" promise what no store can prove.

What are some catchy slogans for T-shirts?

Short lines about weight, fit or wear: "260 gsm. Holds its shape.", "Boxy. Slightly cropped. Done." Each works because it's a fact a buyer can check when the tee arrives.

What are some creative ideas for clothing ads?

A fabric close-up for heavyweight or textured pieces, a fit shot on a real person, a review about washing, and a flat-lay with one spec as the headline. Each one answers a question shoppers have before they buy clothes online.

Is ChatGPT or Gemini better for clothing ads?

In our single runs, ChatGPT kept the tee and tag exactly when given the photo, and Gemini's on-model shot changed the fit. Without a photo, the ChatGPT ad added a cap and the Gemini ad added wrong specs. The prompt and the photo mattered more than the tool.

How do I advertise a T-shirt?

Lead with what makes yours different: weight, fit, fabric or where it's made. Show it folded and worn, and use reviews about washing and fit. Our guide to advertising a clothing brand covers channels and a starting budget.

What is the best AI app for clothing brands?

It depends on the job. For one-off images with the garment photo attached, GPT Image 2.5 kept our tee exactly, while Nano Banana Pro changed its fit. For a steady supply of checked ads from your store, a tool built around your product photos and page facts fits better.
