Clothing ad ideas for your brand: fit, fabric and proof

Nobody can touch clothes through a screen, so most hesitation is about fit and fabric: will it fit me, will it go see-through, will it shrink. Ads that answer those questions give shoppers a reason to click; a styled photo alone leaves them guessing. Seven ads our engine made for Oatfield Supply, a fictional heavyweight tee brand, show how to answer each one.

In short

What makes a good clothing ad?

A good clothing ad answers the fit and fabric questions a shopper can't settle without touching the garment: how it's cut, how heavy and opaque the fabric is, whether it holds up in the wash. Show the real piece on a body and flat, give one hard number such as fabric weight, and add a review.

Four reasons people buy clothing online, and the proof each needs

Clothing buyers aren't short of options. They're short of certainty. Each reason below removes one uncertainty, with something the ad can show.

  1. 01

    Fit, shown on a body

Fit is the question a flat product photo can't answer, and it's the risk every online clothing buyer takes.

    Proof the ad needs

An on-body photo with the cut in words (boxy, dropped shoulders, slightly cropped), the size range, and the model's height and size worn if you have them.

See it in the ad "Boxy. Slightly cropped. Done."
  2. 02

    Fabric you can judge

Many shoppers have bought thin tees that went see-through after a wash, and they look for a way to tell before they buy.

    Proof the ad needs

Fabric weight and fiber exactly as labeled (260 gsm, 100% organic cotton jersey) and a review about opacity ("Finally a tee that doesn't go see-through.").

See it in the ad "Finally a tee that doesn't go see-through."
  3. 03

    It survives the wash

Shrinking, twisting seams and stretched necks are what make a cheap tee expensive per wear.

    Proof the ad needs

Construction from the page (garment-dyed and pre-shrunk, double-needle hems, a ribbed neck that won't stretch out) and a wash review ("Washed it 20 times and it still fits like day one.").

See it in the ad "2,318 reviews. One tee."
  4. 04

    Low risk to try

Fit risk is the reason people wait. A clear returns policy takes it away.

    Proof the ad needs

Free returns within 30 days, the shipping threshold, and the price per tee in a multipack if you sell one.

See it in the ad "Built like it matters."

Fabric and origin words, and what has to stand behind them

Clothing copy borrows a lot of technical words. Shoppers trust them more than adjectives, which is exactly why each one needs to be accurate.

On the adWhat it tells the shopperWhat has to back it
260 gsmHow heavy, and so how thick and opaque, the fabric isYour mill's spec for the finished fabric
100% organic cottonThe fiber, and how it was grownThe fiber content on the label, and certification for the organic part
Pre-shrunkThe fit won't change much after washingYour own wash tests, before you print it
Garment-dyedDyed after sewing, so color varies slightly piece to pieceSay so, so color differences don't read as defects
Cut and sewn in Los AngelesWhere the cutting and sewing happenedAccurate as written; it doesn't claim the fabric is American
Made in USAAll or virtually all of it is made in the USEvery significant input traced, under the FTC's standard

Oatfield's "Cut and sewn in Los Angeles" is the safer kind of origin line: it names the steps that happened in the US and makes no claim about where the cotton or the fabric came from.

Photo checklist for clothing ads

Clothing photos have to do the touching for the shopper. These shots cover fit, fabric and color, and every ad on this page uses them.

  • On a body, front and side. Fit lives in the shoulder seam, the hem and the drape. A side view shows the length and the boxiness a front view hides.

  • Two or three sizes on different bodies. Label each with the size worn and the person's height. It answers "what would it look like on me" better than a size chart.

  • Flat, with measurements. Chest width and length marked on a flat shot turn S, M and L into numbers buyers can compare with a tee they own.

  • Fabric close-up in raking light. Side light shows the knit, the weight and the rib of the collar. It's the closest a photo gets to touch.

  • Held up to a window. The simplest opacity test there is. If the fabric is heavy enough, show it.

  • The folded stack of colors. For range and multipack ads. Shoot in daylight so garment-dyed colors read true.

  • After real washing. A tee after many washes beside a new one is strong durability proof, if it's real and the count is honest.

Clothing ad copy lines you can adapt

Each line answers a fit, fabric or risk question. Use your own numbers and reviews, all of them from your product page first.

  • Heavy on purpose.

Over a photo that shows the fabric weight.

  • 260 gsm organic cotton.

    The number does the persuading.

  • Boxy. Slightly cropped. Done.

The cut in three words, over an on-body photo.

  • "Finally a tee that doesn't go see-through."

A review that names the worry.

  • "Washed it 20 times and it still fits like day one."

    Durability in a customer's words.

  • Garment-dyed and pre-shrunk, so the fit stays.

Construction as a promise you can back.

  • Free returns within 30 days.

The risk-remover, as a second line.

  • Cut and sewn in Los Angeles.

    Origin, stated precisely.

  • Three tees, $108. Usually $126.

Multipack value against your own regular price.

Lines to leave out of clothing ads

AvoidWhySay instead
"Made in USA" when the fabric or trims come from abroadThe FTC requires an unqualified Made in USA claim to mean all or virtually all made in the US, with no or negligible foreign content.Say what happened where: "Cut and sewn in Los Angeles."
"Organic tee" without certificationUSDA guidance says textiles certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard may be sold as organic, and fiber claims need those fibers certified; the USDA organic seal needs the finished product certified."Made with 100% organic cotton", with the certificate on file.
"Bamboo" for rayon made from bambooThe FTC's textile rules require generic fiber names on labels, and it has brought cases against retailers that sold rayon as "bamboo"."Rayon made from bamboo", matching the label.
"Shrink-proof" or "lasts forever"Absolute claims need proof you probably don't have, and one shrunken tee in the comments undoes the ad."Pre-shrunk" and a real wash review.
"One size fits all"Rarely true, and the shoppers it doesn't fit become returns and bad reviews. The size range and the measurements: "XS to XXL, see the chart."

Clothing claims: fiber, origin and organic

Clothing ads rarely run into Meta's restricted categories. The rules that matter are the FTC's labeling rules, which shape what an ad can say about what a garment is made of and where.

  • Fiber content and generic names. Under the FTC's Textile Rules, most clothing must carry a label with the fiber content (by generic fiber name and percentage), the country of origin and the company responsible. The fabric claims in an ad should match that label.
  • Origin, online. The FTC says catalogs and other mail-order promotional materials for textile products, including online materials, must disclose whether a product is made in the US, imported, or both.
  • Made in USA. An unqualified claim must mean all or virtually all made in the US. Qualified claims that describe specific steps, such as "cut and sewn in", are the honest option when the fabric comes from elsewhere.
  • Organic. The USDA says textiles that meet the Global Organic Textile Standard may be sold as organic in the US, that a label may say specific fibers are organic (with the percentage) when all of those fibers are certified, and that only a finished product certified to USDA organic rules may claim to be USDA organic or use the seal.

Reviews about fit carry weight in clothing ads. If you quote "true to size", make sure it reflects what most buyers report, not the one review that matches your size chart.

What people ask about clothing ads

How do I advertise my clothing brand?

Pick one hero product and run three or four ads that each answer a different doubt: fit on a body, fabric weight, how it washes, and how easy returns are. Use real photos and real reviews, test the ads together, and put more budget behind the one that sells.

What is a good slogan for clothing?

One that carries a fact about the clothes: "Heavy on purpose.", "Boxy. Slightly cropped. Done.", "Built like it matters." Brand-mood slogans ("Wear your vibe") can sit in the logo; the ad itself needs a reason to buy.

What are some creative ideas for clothing ads?

An unpopular opinion about fabric weight, a fit described in three words over an on-body photo, a review card that names the see-through worry, an annotated construction shot, and a big rating with a wash-test quote. Oatfield's ads above show each of them finished.

How do you advertise a t-shirt?

Lead with what separates your tee from a multipack one: fabric weight in gsm, the cut, the construction, where it's made. Show it on a body and folded, add one review about how it wears, and give the price. A tee ad that says "premium cotton" and nothing else won't stand out.

What are some catchy slogans for t-shirts?

For selling a plain tee, short lines about the shirt itself work: "Heavy on purpose.", "A tee should have some weight to it.", "Finally a tee that doesn't go see-through." For a graphic tee, the design usually is the slogan, so let the print be the hero.

How do I make clothing ads for Instagram and Facebook?

Design at 4:5 for feeds and 9:16 for Stories and Reels, with the garment on a body in at least one ad. Keep text off the clothes themselves, put the fabric fact and the price in short lines, and test fit, fabric and review angles side by side.

Should clothing ads show models or flat lays?

Both, for different jobs. On-body photos answer fit and are usually the stronger hero; flat lays and folded stacks show color range and work for multipack and detail ads. A flat shot with measurements is a useful third.

What does good fashion ad copy look like?

Specific and short: the cut, the fabric, one number, one review. "260 gsm organic cotton. Boxy fit. $42." tells a shopper more than "Your new everyday favorite", and it's easier to check.

How are ads for kids' clothing different?

Parents buy on softness, how it washes, how it sizes by age and how long it will fit. Show the garment flat or on a child only with a parent's permission, and lead with those practical facts. Our [baby product ad ideas](/ad-ideas/baby-products) page goes deeper on selling to parents.

Can I call my clothing organic or Made in USA in an ad?

Organic: if the textile is certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard, or you name the certified fiber and its percentage. Made in USA: only if all or virtually all of it is made in the US; otherwise describe the steps, such as "cut and sewn in Los Angeles".
