how to advertise etsy shop
How to advertise an Etsy shop: Etsy Ads, Offsite Ads and what's outside Etsy
Etsy sellers have two ad systems before they ever touch Meta or Pinterest: Etsy Ads, which you pay for per click from a daily budget, and Offsite Ads, which Etsy runs on other sites and bills only when a sale comes through. Most of advertising an Etsy shop is deciding how much of each to use, knowing what the fees leave you, and choosing where outside traffic still makes sense.

In short
What is the best way to advertise an Etsy shop?
Fix your listings first: titles, photos and reviews decide whether paid clicks convert. Then run Etsy Ads on your few best-selling listings with a small daily budget, check the Offsite Ads fee against your margin, and use Pinterest and short video to bring outside traffic to the listings that already sell.
At a glance
- Inside Etsy
- Etsy Ads: you pay per click, from $1 a day
- Outside Etsy, run by Etsy
- Offsite Ads: 15% or 12% of an order, only when it sells, capped at $100
- Where to start
- Etsy Ads on listings that already sell
- Outside traffic
- Pinterest pins and short video, linked to listings
- The rule that bites
- No adding buyers to your email list without consent
Which channels fit an Etsy shop, in the order to try them
On Etsy, shoppers are already shopping, so the first money goes inside the marketplace. Outside channels come second, and they behave differently when the checkout belongs to Etsy rather than to you.
- 01
Etsy Ads
Start hereWhy it fits
Your listings appear in Etsy search, category pages and market pages to people who came to buy. You set a daily budget, from $1, and pay only when someone clicks.
The trade-off
Under $25 a day every listing runs on Etsy's "Efficient spending" strategy, so you can't push one listing harder. Weak listings burn clicks: an ad can't fix a dull first photo.
- 02
Offsite Ads (run by Etsy)
Only if it fitsWhy it fits
Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Bing and partner sites with no upfront cost to you.
The trade-off
When a buyer clicks one of those ads and orders within 30 days, you pay 15% of the order (12% once your shop has made $10,000 in a 365-day period, after which it's required). On low-margin items that can be most of the profit.
- 03
Pinterest
Add nextWhy it fits
Handmade gifts, decor, weddings and craft supplies get planned on boards, and a pin can link straight to an Etsy listing. Organic pins cost nothing but time.
The trade-off
Slow to build, and paid pins pointing at Etsy can only be judged on clicks and your Etsy stats, not on orders the ad platform tracks.
- 04
Instagram and TikTok (organic)
Add nextWhy it fits
Making-of clips are the one thing a mass-market seller can't copy. Fifteen seconds of stitching, pouring or engraving gives people a reason to look up your shop.
The trade-off
It takes steady posting to matter, and views don't always become shop visits.
- 05
Meta ads to your listings
Add laterWhy it fits
You can run Facebook and Instagram ads that link to an Etsy listing, which helps when you want to push one item to a specific audience.
The trade-off
Meta finds buyers by watching purchases through its pixel on your own checkout. You can't add your own pixel to Etsy's checkout, so these campaigns optimize for clicks, not Etsy orders, and Etsy's Offsite Ads may already be showing your listings there.
- 06
Your own email list
Only if it fitsWhy it fits
Handmade buyers come back for new collections and gifts, and a list is the one audience no marketplace can take away.
The trade-off
Etsy's Seller Policy says you can't add Etsy members to your mailing list without their consent, so the list grows slowly, from people who sign up themselves.
How to size a starting budget for an Etsy shop
The last two rows below are Meta's learning-phase rule, which applies if you send Meta ads to a store of your own; Etsy Ads don't learn that way. The first rows matter for every channel: they say what one Etsy order can afford, after product cost, shipping and Etsy's listing, transaction and payment fees.
| Order value | $38.00 |
|---|---|
| Margin after product cost, shipping and fees | 42% |
| Most a first order can cost to break even | $15.96 |
| 50 purchases a week at that cost | $798 a week |
| The same budget per day | about $114 |
Meta says an ad set usually leaves its learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit, and recommends a budget large enough to get enough results. Meta Business Help Center: About the learning phase
On Etsy, use the break-even figure ($15.96 in this example) as your ceiling for ad cost per order. Measure it from the Etsy Ads dashboard: spend divided by the orders it reports, per listing.
- Start Etsy Ads at a budget you can afford to learn with. The minimum is $1 a day; a few dollars a day across your best listings gives enough clicks to compare them within two weeks.
- Advertise listings that already sell. A listing with reviews and some organic orders turns clicks into sales; a new listing with no reviews mostly turns them into cost.
- Pull listings above break-even. After two or three weeks, switch off ads for listings whose ad cost per order is higher than what an order leaves you.
- Raise what an order is worth. A personalization upcharge, a set of two or a free-shipping threshold lifts the order value the budget math starts from.
Offsite Ads: what the fee does to one order
Offsite Ads are charged on orders from buyers who clicked one of Etsy's ads on another site and bought from your shop within 30 days. The fee comes on top of Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee, which also applies to shipping you charge.
| Order total | Offsite Ads at 15% | At 12% (shops past $10,000) | 6.5% transaction fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25 | $3.75 | $3.00 | $1.63 |
| $60 | $9.00 | $7.20 | $3.90 |
| $300 | $45.00 | $36.00 | $19.50 |
| $900 | $100 (the cap; 15% would be $135) | $100 (the cap; 12% would be $108) | $58.50 |
Run the fee against your own margin. On the $38 example order, a 15% Offsite Ads fee is $5.70 of the $15.96 the order leaves, so an Offsite Ads sale still makes money. On a $12 item with a thin margin, it may not. While your shop has always made under $10,000 in any 365-day period you can opt out in Shop Manager; once it passes that, participation is required for the life of the shop.
Offers that work for an Etsy shop
Etsy gives sellers its own offer tools, and some of them also affect where listings appear. Use those before inventing your own.
Free shipping on US orders of $35 or more
Etsy's free shipping guarantee gives your listings priority placement in US shoppers' search results, and it's a natural nudge toward a second item.
Watch: Fold the shipping cost into your prices first, or the guarantee eats your margin.
Targeted offers from Shop Manager
Etsy can send a coupon to shoppers who abandoned a cart or favorited an item, and a thank-you coupon to past buyers. These reach people without breaking the mailing-list rule.
Personalization as the upgrade
A name, a date or a custom color is what buyers come to Etsy for, and charging for it raises the order without discounting.
A seasonal sale with a clear end
Etsy's sales tools show the reduced price on the listing, which helps Etsy Ads clicks convert during gift seasons.
Watch: Base the reduction on a price you really charged before, and end it when you say it ends.
Your first 30 days advertising an Etsy shop
The order matters: paid clicks land on your listings, so the listings get fixed first, and outside traffic only goes to listings Etsy's own shoppers have already proved.
Days 1 to 5
Tune the listings you'll pay to show
Rewrite titles with the words buyers type, make the first photo readable at thumbnail size, add a short listing video, and answer size, materials and processing time in the description. Turn on the free shipping guarantee if your prices allow it.
Days 6 to 7
Switch on Etsy Ads for 5 to 10 proven listings
Pick the listings with reviews and some organic sales, set a daily budget you could spend for a month without worry, and pause ads on everything else.
Days 8 to 21
Give Etsy Ads two weeks of clicks
Don't toggle the budget daily. Compare clicks, orders and spend per listing in the Etsy Ads dashboard, and note which first photos earn clicks that turn into orders.
Days 15 to 24
Pin and post the listings that sell
Make 2:3 pins and short making-of clips for the two or three listings Etsy Ads proved, linked to those listings. Set up targeted offers for abandoned carts and favorites.
Days 25 to 30
Decide on Offsite Ads and outside ads
Open the Offsite Ads dashboard, add up the fees against the margin on those orders, and decide whether to stay in while opting out is still allowed. Only then test Meta ads to a listing, judged on clicks and your Etsy stats.
Angles to test for Etsy shop ads
Inside Etsy your first photo is the ad, so the angle is chosen when you shoot it. Outside Etsy, these are the angles that suit handmade and personalized goods; for layouts, browse the static ad examples.

Policy flags for advertising an Etsy shop
Etsy's own house rules shape how you can market to its buyers, and the usual ad rules still apply to anything you run outside Etsy.
Buyers and your email list
Etsy's Seller Policy says that without the buyer's consent you may not add any Etsy member to your email or physical mailing list, or use that buyer's identity for marketing.

Offsite Ads become mandatory
Once your shop has made $10,000 or more in any consecutive 365 days, Offsite Ads are required for the lifetime of the shop, at the 12% rate.
Reviews in outside ads
Quote real Etsy reviews only, unedited in meaning. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews and buying reviews, including paying for positive ones.

Fan art and brand names
Listings and ads built on characters, logos or brand names you don't own get reported and removed, on Etsy and on Meta alike.

How often to refresh Etsy ads, and what to measure
Etsy Ads use your listing photos, so refreshing an Etsy ad usually means improving a listing, not making a new ad.
Check the Etsy Ads dashboard every week but change things every two to three weeks: swap the first photo on listings with clicks but no orders, retire listings above break-even, and rotate in seasonal listings a few weeks before each gift date.
For pins and Meta ads you run yourself, add new images every few weeks rather than editing old ones. On Meta, a "Creative fatigue" status means an ad now costs twice what your past ads did per result: time for a materially different image.
What to measure
- Ad cost per order, per listing
- Etsy Ads spend divided by its orders. Compare it with what an order leaves you; it's the number that decides which listings keep their ads.
- Click-to-order rate
- If a listing gets clicks and no orders, the problem is the listing (price, photos, reviews), not the budget.
- Offsite Ads fees as a share of sales
- Tells you whether staying in Offsite Ads is worth it while you still have the choice.
- Favorites per visit on new listings
- An early signal of which new items deserve Etsy Ads before they have sales of their own.
Questions about advertising an Etsy shop
Is it worth paying for Etsy Ads?
It can be for listings that already convert, because Etsy Ads put them in front of people who came to buy. Divide your ad spend by the orders it brings for each listing and compare that with what an order leaves you after costs and fees. Keep ads only where it's lower.
How much does it cost to advertise on Etsy?
Etsy Ads cost whatever daily budget you set, from $1 a day, charged per click. Offsite Ads cost nothing upfront and charge 15% of an attributed order, or 12% for shops past $10,000 in sales, with a $100 cap per order.
How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?
On a $100 order including shipping, Etsy's transaction fee is 6.5%, or $6.50, plus the $0.20 listing fee and a payment processing fee that varies by country. If the buyer came through an Offsite Ad, add $15 at the 15% rate or $12 at 12%.
What is the difference between Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads?
Etsy Ads show your listings inside Etsy and charge per click from a budget you set. Offsite Ads are run by Etsy on outside sites such as Google, Facebook and Pinterest, and charge a percentage only when a click leads to an order within 30 days.
Can I turn off Etsy Offsite Ads?
Yes, while your shop has always made less than $10,000 in any 365-day period: you can opt out in Shop Manager. Once a shop passes $10,000 in a 365-day period, Offsite Ads are required for the lifetime of the shop, at the lower 12% fee.
How do I advertise my Etsy shop on Pinterest?
Make tall 2:3 pins of your best-selling items in use, with a short keyword-rich description, and link each pin to its listing. Pin regularly to boards that match how buyers plan, such as gift guides, wedding ideas or room styles.
How do I advertise my Etsy shop on Instagram?
Post making-of Reels and finished pieces in real settings, put your shop link in your bio, and tag items in posts where available. If you run paid ads, judge them on clicks and your Etsy stats, since Meta can't see Etsy orders.
Can you run Facebook ads to an Etsy listing?
Yes. Create a traffic or link click campaign in Meta Ads Manager with the listing as the destination. Because you can't put your own Meta pixel on Etsy's checkout, the campaign can't optimize for purchases, so track results through your Etsy stats.
How do I promote my Etsy shop on TikTok?
Film the making, packing or personalizing of an order in under 20 seconds and say in the caption where to find it. Process clips show the handwork mass-market sellers can't, and they are the content TikTok viewers share.
How do I get people to see my Etsy shop?
Start with search inside Etsy: titles and tags in buyers' words, a clear first photo and the free shipping guarantee, which gives US listings priority placement. Then add Etsy Ads on proven listings and send outside traffic from Pinterest and social video.
How do I promote my Etsy shop for free?
Improve titles, photos and tags so Etsy search shows your listings, post making-of clips on Instagram and TikTok, pin your products on Pinterest, and use Etsy's targeted offers for abandoned carts and favorites. Offsite Ads also cost nothing until they bring a sale.
