# Instagram Story ad examples, with the safe zone switched on

Source: https://storetoads.com/examples/instagram-story-ads/

Twelve Story ads for fictional product brands, at the real 9:16 shape. Switch on Meta's safe zone to see what Instagram's profile icon and call to action would cover, and read what each ad does well and what it would need before it runs.

*Updated November 4, 2026. Platform specs checked November 4, 2026 against the sources listed at the end. Fictional sample brands, real engine output.*

## What makes a good Instagram Story ad?

A good Story ad makes its point in the first second: an image Story can show for 5 to 16 seconds, or until someone taps away. Put one big line in the upper middle, show the product large, and keep words out of the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side.

## The Story spec, in one table

| | Instagram Stories image ad |
| --- | --- |
| Ratio and size | 9:16, 1440 x 2560 px |
| File | JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB, at least 500 px wide |
| Keep free of text and logos | Roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side |
| Primary text | 125 characters recommended |
| Time on screen | 5 to 16 seconds, or until the viewer swipes away |

*Meta Ads Guide, image ad specs for Instagram Stories, checked November 4, 2026.*

At 1440 x 2560, Meta's margins come to about 360 px at the top, 900 px at the bottom and 86 px on each side. The full spec, with Facebook and Messenger Stories, is on our [Instagram Story ad size page](https://storetoads.com/sizes/instagram-story-ad-maker/).

### Sunmere Swim: Cut to stay put, all summer.

![Warm sunlit poolside Sunmere Swim ad: 'Cut to stay put, all summer.' A smiling woman with her hair in a bun sits on the pool edge in a terracotta ribbed one-piece. It shows 4.7 from 1,938 reviews, free returns within 30 days and a $98 shop button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/sunmere-01-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Swimwear · Lifestyle type · 9:16.*

Sunmere Swim, a fictional swimwear brand, with Meta's safe zone drawn on. Its headline, 'Cut to stay put, all summer.', sits low on the photo, so in this placed Story file it runs into the bottom 35%, along with the price and the button. A Story laid out on its own would move those words up into the clear band.

## 12 Story ads, by what they lead with

> **About these samples.** Our engine made them on October 17, 2026, for fictional brands. Back then our Story file was the 4:5 design placed full width in the middle of the 9:16 canvas. That keeps every headline below the top 14%, but the bottom of each design, usually the price and the button, lands inside the bottom 35% Meta asks you to keep clear. Since October 28, 2026, our engine first lays the Story out again by code, moving every word into the clear band; designs too dense to move still come out placed, and the app marks them. We show these as they were made, with notes on what to fix.

### One line, set big

Stories move on in seconds, so these lead with a single line you can read before the next tap.

### Oatfield Supply: Heavy on purpose.

![Orange Oatfield Supply ad: 'HEAVY ON PURPOSE.' in green and cream blocks, with a stack of four folded tees in oat, green, charcoal and white, a 260 GSM badge, 4.7 from 2,318 reviews, a quote, and a $42 shop button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/oatfield-01-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Clothing · Bold poster · 9:16.*

'HEAVY ON PURPOSE.' fills the top of the design in two colored blocks, so the claim reads in under a second, and the 260 GSM badge proves it beside the stack of tees. With the safe zone on, the price, rating and button sit in the bottom 35%, where Instagram draws its own call to action.

### Saltpeak: 4.7 stars of crunch.

![Cream Saltpeak ad: '4.7 stars of crunch.' with a huge 4.7 and a red 'Out of 5' circle, five red stars, 4,189 reviews, six 5 oz bags for $24, a quote from Megan F. and a 'Grab the 6-pack' button beside the red Saltpeak chickpea bag. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/saltpeak-02-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Snacks · Big number · 9:16.*

A rating set this large suits a Story: '4.7' reads at a glance, with the review count right under it. The six-pack price and the button are lower down, inside the bottom 35%, so in a Story the number has to do the selling.

### Sora: 4.7 out of 5

![Dark navy Sora ad: '4.7 out of 5' in large yellow and white type, with 'from 2,310 reviews' below it, a five-star quote from Kenji T., verified buyer, a light blue Sparkling Yuzu can, and a 'Shop Sparkling Yuzu · $29' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/sora-06-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Drinks · Big number · 9:16.*

Navy background, a big yellow '4.7 out of 5' and one can. Three things, and the number is the first one you read. The quote and the button fall in the bottom 35%; the rating and the can carry the ad above it.

### A customer says it

A review in large type works in a Story because it's one sentence, not a paragraph. Pick the quote that names the doubt your product answers.

### Pebblemill Soap Co.: “Lasts forever and the lather is so creamy.”

![Dark brown Pebblemill Soap Co. ad: '“Lasts forever and the lather is so creamy.”' with five gold stars, a Hannah W. verified buyer credit, 4.9 average from 1,406 reviews, a 'cured for six weeks' badge, the oat soap bar in a kraft wrapper, and a 'Try a bar · $10' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/pebblemill-02-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Soap · Review card · 9:16.*

A quote that names two benefits, 'lasts forever' and 'creamy', in big serif type. Cream type on dark brown holds up on a bright phone screen. The 'cured for six weeks' badge sits beside the bar; the price button falls in the bottom 35%.

### Northvale Nutrition: “Tastes like melted vanilla ice cream.”

![Dark navy Northvale Nutrition ad: '“Tastes like melted vanilla ice cream.”' under five gold stars, with two smaller review quotes, a tub of Vanilla Bean whey isolate beside a shaker, a glass, oats and a banana, 4.7 from 2,986 reviews and a 'Shop now' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/northvale-02-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Protein powder · Review card · 9:16.*

Taste is the doubt with protein powder, and this quote answers it in six words at the top of the screen. The tub, shaker and fruit place the product in a kitchen. The rating and button sit in the zone Meta keeps for its call to action.

### Elderhush: “Smells like a walk in the woods after rain.”

![Dark green Elderhush ad: '“Smells like a walk in the woods after rain.”' with five gold stars, a note from Nora B. saying 'My whole living room changed.', 4.8 from 1,328 reviews, a Forest Morning dropper bottle and a 'Shop Forest Morning · $22' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/elderhush-02-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Essential oils · Review card · 9:16.*

A scent can't be seen, so a customer describes it. The quote fills the upper half and the bottle stands on the right. The second line, 'My whole living room changed.', is small at Story size: one quote per Story is plenty.

### A question, answered on the same screen

Curiosity holds a thumb for a second longer. Each of these answers its own question, so nobody has to tap through to find out.

### Shorelark Eyewear: Why does glare vanish off the water?

![Dark navy Shorelark Eyewear ad: 'Why does glare vanish off the water?' with a tortoise sunglasses photo on a yellow circle, a 100% UVA/UVB protection (UV400) tag, a 5-star review quote, 4.8 from 1,677 reviews, and a 'Shop Harbor, $89' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/shorelark-02-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Sunglasses · Question hook · 9:16.*

The question in the headline is answered right under it: polarized lenses, with 100% UVA/UVB protection (UV400) on a tag. A curiosity ad that closes its own loop doesn't depend on a tap. The review and the button sit in the bottom 35%.

### Tetherly: Why does this strap unclip in one second?

![Coral Tetherly ad: 'Why does this strap unclip in one second?' with a sage green phone case on a green and coral cord, a 4.7 rating from 2,389 reviews, a quote from Bree T., an answer card and a 'Shop the Sage case' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/tetherly-01-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Phone accessories · Question hook · 9:16.*

Coral background, a strap you can see, and a question about one second. The answer card says how the strap works. In a Story the question and the case read clearly; the rating, quote and button would need to sit higher.

### Butterbloom: Whipped with fair-trade ______ butter.

![Peach Butterbloom ad: 'Whipped with fair-trade ______ butter.' with a blank in the headline, answered by a paper note reading The Answer, Shea, $28.00, Vanilla Oat 8 oz. A jar of whipped body butter sits beside vanilla beans, with a 'Shop Vanilla Oat, $28' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/butterbloom-02-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Body care · Fill in the blank · 9:16.*

A blank in the headline, answered on a paper note: Shea, $28. Fill-in-the-blank works in a Story because the eye goes straight from the gap to the answer. The rating and the button sit in the bottom 35%.

### Show it where it lives

A photo of the product in use, or in its place, reads at full screen better than a cutout on a flat color.

### Lumiwisp: Salon lashes, minus the salon.

![Dark plum Lumiwisp ad: 'Salon lashes, minus the salon.' beside a close-up of an eye with wispy lashes and a woman holding the Lumiwisp box. A card lists kit contents, 4.6 from 2,207 reviews, a 'Shop the kit · $24' button and free shipping over $35. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/lumiwisp-01-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Lashes · Lifestyle type · 9:16.*

A close-up of the lashes on an eye does more than a photo of the box could: you see the result at full-screen size. The headline is short enough to read at once. The kit contents and the price card sit low, inside the bottom 35%.

### Duneloft: Lived-in from the first night.

![Soft cream Duneloft ad: 'Lived-in from the first night.' over a sunlit bed with rumpled oat linen sheets and a green waffle blanket, a handwritten note 'rumpled, on purpose', 4.8 from 1,513 reviews, and a 'Shop the sheet set' button. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/duneloft-01-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Bedding · Lifestyle type · 9:16.*

A rumpled bed in morning light, and a handwritten 'rumpled, on purpose' that answers the doubt about wrinkly linen. Calm photos like this suit Stories, and the headline sits just below the top 14%.

### Stagwick: Smells like a cabin. Not a cologne counter.

![Dark charcoal Stagwick ad: 'Smells like a cabin. Not a cologne counter.' above an amber dropper bottle of Cedar & Vetiver beard oil, with a wood brush, a gray towel and a cedar sprig. A five-star quote from Tyler M. and a 'Shop beard oil, $24' button sit below. Shown in the 9:16 size.](https://storetoads.com/samples/ads/stagwick-01-9x16.webp)

*Fictional sample brand, made by our engine. Men's grooming · Lifestyle type · 9:16.*

The headline names the scent by comparison: a cabin, not a cologne counter. The bottle stands with a brush and a towel, so it reads as part of a morning routine. The quote and the button sit low, in the bottom 35%.

## What the good ones have in common

- **The point lands in the first second.** Meta shows an image Story ad for 5 to 16 seconds, or until someone taps away. Each ad above makes one point a viewer can take in before deciding.
- **The headline sits in the upper middle.** Below the top 14%, where the profile icon is, and well above the bottom 35%, where the call to action goes.
- **The product is big.** A product that looked fine in a feed can look small at full screen. These ads give it a large share of the screen.
- **The contrast is strong.** Dark ads with light type (Pebblemill, Northvale, Stagwick) and light ads with dark type (Duneloft) both read on a phone in daylight. Thin type on a busy photo doesn't.
- **The ad and the primary text agree.** Meta suggests 125 characters of primary text for a Story. Say the same thing there as on the image, so the two don't compete.

## Six mistakes we see in Story ads

- **A feed ad dropped into a Story unchanged.** Its bottom line ends up where the call to action goes. Our October samples above show exactly that, which is why we now lay the Story out separately.
- **The price or button on the bottom edge.** Instagram draws its own call to action there. Put the price next to the product instead.
- **Words against the side edges.** Meta asks for 6% clear on each side, about 86 px at 1440 x 2560.
- **Three messages on one screen.** A review, an offer and a feature list compete for a few seconds. Make three Stories instead.
- **Small print you only checked on a monitor.** Look at the design on your phone, at arm's length, before you run it.
- **Only one Story.** A Story has one line to win with, so make a few with different opening lines and keep the one people tap through.

## How to use these as a starting point

1. Pick the group that fits what your store can prove: a strong rating for the first, real reviews for the second, a feature people ask about for the third, a good lifestyle photo for the fourth.
2. Write the one line first. If it doesn't fit on two lines at Story size, it's two ads.
3. Lay the 9:16 out on its own, or check the placed version against the safe zone in Ads Manager before you publish.
4. Run three or more Stories with different openings, and keep making more of the one people tap through.

## Questions about Instagram Story ads

**What are Instagram Story ads?**

Full-screen vertical ads that appear between the Stories people watch. Meta's Ads Guide says an image Story ad shows for 5 to 16 seconds or until the viewer swipes away, with a call to action at the bottom of the screen.

**Are Instagram Stories 4:5 or 9:16?**

9:16. Meta's Ads Guide lists 9:16 at 1440 x 2560 pixels for Instagram Stories image ads. Feeds use 4:5. A 4:5 image in a Story slot leaves space above and below it.

**Where should text go on an Instagram Story ad?**

In the middle of the screen. Meta suggests leaving roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% of each side free of text, logos and other key elements, so the profile icon and the call to action don't cover them.

**How much does an Instagram Story ad cost?**

There is no set price. Meta sells Story placements in its ad auction, so the cost depends on your budget, audience and how people respond. You set a budget in Ads Manager and Meta spends up to it.

**How is a Story ad different from a feed ad?**

It fills the screen and is seen for seconds, in a run of Stories people tap through. A feed ad sits in a scroll and can carry more detail. A Story needs one big line, a large product and nothing important near the top or bottom edge.

**Can I use the same ad for Instagram and Facebook Stories?**

Yes. Facebook and Messenger Stories take the same 9:16 shape, so one 1440 x 2560 file covers them.

**Does StoreToAds make Instagram Story ads?**

Every paid design comes with a 9:16 file at 1440 x 2560. Our engine lays it out again by code to keep the words inside Meta's clear band, and places the 4:5 design instead when a design can't be moved. Eligible designs can also become a seven-second MP4 in 9:16.
